Welcome to the Photo Archive section of the Canadian Navy Heritage Project website. This section provides separate access to all the photographs relating to the History and Heritage or Customs and Traditions sections of the site.
Each photograph, when accessed either through the Photo Archive page or as a link in the other sections of the site, is available in three sizes. The first is a thumbnail size (low-res), used on text pages or subject master Photo Archive pages. Selecting the thumbnail will take you to the medium resolution (med-res) photo description page. This page contains all the information about the photograph; a caption, a negative number, the creator of the image (if known) and the organization to which photo credit should be given. The med-res page also allows the user to download the high resolution(hi-res) version of the individual picture, all photographs of the same category (all the pictures of HMCS NIOBE or of Sir Wilfred Laurier, for example) or to visit the Ship Technical Data Page (for ships only). Selecting the medium resolution photo will take the user to the full size photo. These hi-res photos are all available in 300 dpi resolution and some are quite large.
As previously mentioned, all the hi-res photos can be downloaded from the site, either individually or in sets, depending on the subject. For example, there are nearly 220 photographs of HMCS NIOBE. On any of the HMCS NIOBE med-res photo archive pages, there is an opportunity to download either the picture currently being viewed, or all the HMCS NIOBE photographs. NIOBE has three .ZIP files, each of about 90 meg, that contain all the photographs. Most other subjects have only one .ZIP file. All the hi-res photos are in .JPG format.
Please ensure that you check the “Important Notices” section in respect of using photographs downloaded from this site. It is especially important that the appropriate credit be given when any photographs from this site are used.
If you are unable to download the photographs you would like, just let us know through the Guest Book and a CD ROM will be prepared and sent to you at no cost. Please note however, no copies of the entire archive will be provided, nor can the format of the photos be changed (i.e.: .JPG to .TIF or .BMP)
